THE RETURN - the carving
Iconic of so many crews returning to Waterbeach
Help us to save it for the museum
The Carving by Gordon Hayes, in Purbeck Pond free limestone, is 4x3 foot and named ‘The Return’ showing the Gordon Crew coming off their Lancaster Bomber, A for Able, on the 14th October 1944. Photographed by a Daily Express photographer, the crew were returning from a mission to bomb Duisburg.
The scene is iconic of many crews returning home and a is a memorial to them and the ones who did not return to Waterbeach (both RAF and RE) over the years since 1942 when there had been an RAF Staton and Royal Engineers Barracks.
The museum Trustees feel its rightful home is here in Waterbeach and needs to be retained having returned. This Carving is on loan for eighteen months but the Museum is fund raising to purchase it by the end of that time. We need to raise £13,000. Can you help? If so, please donate by using either the QR Code or by bank transfer
